"Nova totius terrarum orbis geographica ac hydrographica tabula". Hendrik Hondius (1597-1651) designed this double hemispherical map of the world showing Australia as the unmapped Terra Australis Incognita. The map is decorated with three insets in decorative cartouches, miniature portraits in each corner featuring Mercator, Hondius, Caesar, Ptolemy and the background features the 4 elements, aqua, terra, aer and ignis (water, ground, air and fire), and its relief is shown pictorially. The plate is taken from Gerardi Mercatoris “Atlas sive cosmographicae meditationes de fabrica mundi et fabricati figura” published in Amsterdam in 1636.
